DEADLY DETENTIONS: MAPPING DEATH
Capital & Main’s new project, Deadly Detention, is intended to give names and faces to undocumented immigrants who have died in federal detention, and to explain how they met such sad fates in the country most had come to in search of better lives.
Capital & Main’s new project, Deadly Detention, is intended to give names and faces to undocumented immigrants who have died in federal detention, and to explain how they met such sad fates in the country most had come to in search of better lives. It is a counterweight to ICE’s secrecy and comes as the Trump administration expands an already sprawling detention system to accommodate the growing number of immigrants caught up in its deportation surge. The map below shows the 207 deaths in ICE custody from October 1, 2003 to May 24, 2020.

CDF (Contract Detention Facility): a facility that is owned by a private company and contracted directly with the government.
IGSA/DIGSA (Inter‐governmental Service Agreement): a facility operated by local government(s). IGSA facilities may fall under public or private ownership.
HOLD: a holding facility.
HOSPITAL: a medical facility.
SPC (Service Processing Center): a facility that is owned by the government and staffed by a combination of federal and contract employees.
