Eviction Tsunami Averted for Now
In an eleventh hour move, Sacramento extended the statewide eviction moratorium for renters suffering COVID-related hardships.
Last night California’s legislature and Gov. Gavin Newsom agreed to extend protections against evictions for state renters who have been negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. For weeks leading up to the vote and Newsom’s signature on the measure, Assembly Bill 3088, protests had spread in cities faced with a housing crisis. The new law, authored by Assemblyman David Chiu (D-San Francisco), allows tenants to remain in their homes until January 31 by paying landlords at least 25 percent of their rent.
Renters in Los Angeles who have questions are encouraged to call the city’s housing department at 1-866-557-7368 or visit their website.
