A Night to Remember — Pics and Highlights from Capital & Main's 10th Anniversary Gala

Capital & Main’s celebrated its 10th anniversary with a rousing roster of speakers on June 6 at the Biltmore Hotel. Keynote Ray Suarez and honorees Mark Schoofs, Amy Ziering and leaders of the LA Times Guild delivered powerful remarks on the fragile state of journalism. “The vast, far-flung industry that creates your media ecosystem is in crisis and the business is trapped into rebuilding the plane while at a cruising altitude of 35 thousand feet,” declared Suarez.

Emcee Gustavo Arellano challenged the audience to support embattled news publications while publisher Danny Feingold reflected on a decade of impact reporting on inequality and climate change. “Fact-based journalism on the greatest challenges of our time cannot by itself guarantee the endurance of democracy, the protection of our planet or the rise of a more equal society. But without independent journalism, there is no hope for any of them,” said Feingold.

The evening culminated with more than two dozen current and former LA Times editorial staff coming to the stage to accept their award, presented by Capital & Main editor-in-chief Peter Hong and board chair Erin Aubry Kaplan. “If Los Angeles wants to have excellent news media that serves the city, the county, the state—and the nation–the only way to do it is to invest in the journalists who do the hard work,” veteran Times writer Carla Hall told the crowd. “Otherwise, you’re stuck with AI.  And God help us if we’re left with just that.”
